  • Little Bear

Sadly, we lost one of our new baby Poms last week. What we know for a fact is that they ate some of our cat’s food during the night while outside with Greg, and then a couple of hours later they started throwing up. What else they may have gotten into, we don’t know. They were outside and it was dark. There is also the fact that they had their first professional grooming the day before, and could have picked up something there.

Anyway, the vet we were using at that time felt it would be ok to wait on seeing them until the afternoon, even though I told them that the puppies had been throwing up and having diarrea for several hours. A few hours after that, Sandy started having a seizure and we rushed them both to the vet. Sandy didn’t make it. Bear was on IVs for the rest of the day and then sent home. I took her to another vet on Saturday because she threw up again and he said he didn’t know what it was, but put her on antibiotics. She is still throwing up every now and then, but other than that, is a very active and happy 10 week old.

Right now, as with most puppies, she plays hard for a little while and then sleeps. She’s sleeping more than playing and it’s difficult to know if that’s normal or because she’s been sick. One of her favorite places to sleep is on my computer! Little Bear 003

She misses her sister and tries to get the cat or our older dog, Harpo to play with her, but they just aren’t interested. She follows Harpo all over the place. It’s really cute and he’s very patient with her most of the time but isn’t real happy when she tries to chew on his tail or eat his food. She likes laying next to him sometimes, too.

We may get another puppy after we are sure that she is fully recovered from whatever is wrong, but for now we’re just loving her as much as we can.

  • Bear has grown visibly since last Wednesday. Her face has more of a Pomeranian shape, and she is putting on weight. We miss her sister, but our Little Bear will get twice as much love and fuss now. She will be okay.

  • I hate that I didn’t even get to meet Sandy.  I hope Little Bear gets 100% better quickly!

  • It’s good and bad that you didn’t meet Sandy. At least this way you won’t really miss her like we do. I don’t know about Greg, but when Bear starts tearing around the yard at top speeds as she loves to do, I can’t help but see Sandy running along beside her. They played so hard together. As they ran, one would run into the other in an attempt to knock the sister over and win the race. Bear was always grabbing Sandy’s tail and pulling her around and I guess Sandy liked it because she had started chasing her own tail when Bear was sleeping.

If you look at the other picture I sent you of Bear laying on top of my computer, and compare it to the one above, you can see how much she’s grown in just a few weeks.

  • I’m so sorry about the loss of your little puppy, Sandy! I love the photos of Bear sleeping on the Lap Top!

  • Ty Sofaloafa. She was sweet.

  • Hmmm…. kind of history in repeat. Do the names ‘heidi’ and ‘henry’ ring a bell?

Heidi turned out pretty darn good, and I am sure Henry would have too. Still, you have our sympathies from down here.

  • Now that you mention it, I guess that is sort of the same thing. Right down to the vet trying to blame me for letting Sandy get into the cat food in the first place. I won’t go back to the vet that placed blame for Henry, and I won’t go back to this one.

    Thanks for the kind thoughts.
